In 1871 Mason Chapel Colored Methodist Episcopal (C.M.E.) Church was organized at “Nubbin Ridge” in Limestone County.  The church was named “Cokesbury C.M.E after the Methodist Hymnal.

The church later moved to Madison and located on Sullivan and Bradley Street. It is storied to be the first African American church within the city limits. Bradley Street was named for Mother Mattie Bradley, one of Mason Chapel’s oldest and still active members.  The church motto: “And yet we are alive to see each others face”.

When we first saw the property at 4097 Sullivan St, we knew its potential, charm, and character were extremely special… our connection with this historic, hidden gem was immediate.

Leaning on the bones and creating a space that feel fresh yet familiar is part of our history and continues to be our story today. We aim to create a space where all feel welcomed and celebrated when visiting Bellehouse.
